How to read this timeline

A career timeline can look more certain than the evidence behind it. One line may come from an official notice, another from a later recollection, and another from a book catalog. Here, each milestone identifies the kind of record that supports it. Together they show Rick Wayne moving through sport, publishing and public life without pretending that one career ended neatly when another began.

The dates below are selected reference points. They are not a claim to reconstruct every year, journey or appointment. In particular, a publication date establishes when a work appeared in the cited record; it does not tell us when the author began thinking about it. An anniversary article can be useful, but a dated first edition or government notice answers a narrower question more directly.

1938: a Saint Lucian beginning

The IFBB Caribbean Hall of Fame profile gives Wayne’s birth as 27 January 1938 in Saint Lucia and identifies his earlier name as Learie Carasco. This is a sporting institution’s retrospective biography, rather than a civil registration document. IFBB Caribbean profile.

The name distinction is useful throughout the chronology. A person can appear under an earlier name, a professional name and slightly different recording credits without those variations indicating different people. Conversely, matching names alone are insufficient evidence that a book, recording or public record belongs to the same individual. That is why this publication follows the connections supported by the sources, rather than collecting every search result under Rick Wayne.

The 1960s: performance and competitive records

Wayne’s performing career belongs in the story alongside his sporting work. The IFBB retrospective points to his London nightclub singing and a July 1964 Muscle Builder feature connecting those activities. Its account demonstrates that music and bodybuilding were already being presented together, rather than as completely separate chapters. Institutional retrospective.

A more narrowly defined sporting milestone comes in 1966. GMV’s NABBA Universe results list Wayne second in the professional short class. Keeping the federation and division attached to the result preserves what the record actually says. 1966 NABBA results.

This is an important reading rule for every competition entry. “Universe” can refer to events organized by different bodies, while a class result and an overall result answer different questions. A compact biography that removes those distinctions may accidentally change the achievement it is trying to celebrate. Our bodybuilding article treats the competition record separately; the music profile follows the recording evidence.

1970: an editorial role inside bodybuilding

The IFBB Caribbean account dates Wayne’s appointment as editor-in-chief of Muscle Builder to 1970. It places this within a longer, intermittent working relationship with Joe Weider’s publishing operation. Career account.

That milestone changes the questions a reader can ask. A competitor is documented through appearances and results; an editor also leaves decisions about voice, selection and presentation. The overlap matters more than a tidy claim that Wayne simply retired from one identity and adopted another. His experience within the sport and his role in describing it occupied some of the same ground.

The date should still remain attached to its source. A retrospective profile is useful evidence for the broad career sequence, but a full employment history would require additional mastheads, correspondence or other contemporary documentation. We do not turn this single milestone into an unbroken list of jobs and dates.

1985–1987: books and a publishing institution

WorldCat records the first edition of Muscle Wars in 1985 with St. Martin’s Press. A March 1987 Publishers Weekly review then documents Posedown!, the George Snyder and Rick Wayne collaboration. These are two different kinds of contemporary publishing evidence: a catalogued edition and a dated critical response. Muscle Wars record; Posedown review.

The STAR’s own About page dates Star Publishing Company Limited to 1987 and names Rick and Mae Wayne as its founders. We use the company’s stated year here. Company history.

Seen together, the records show publishing activity crossing subject matter and markets. They do not prove that a single decisive moment caused the change. A writer can maintain several commitments at once, and a new business can develop over time. The chronology is strongest when it records the documented milestones without supplying an imagined private explanation for them.

1999: a dated record of Senate service

A government release dated 23 August 1999 announced that the prime minister had advised revocation of Wayne’s Senate appointment. Government announcement.

This date anchors a part of his public life that can otherwise become entangled in retrospective political argument. The document establishes an announced administrative action. It does not, by itself, establish every account of the disagreements surrounding it. A biography should keep those questions apart: what the official record says happened, what participants later said motivated it, and how commentators interpreted the consequences.

For the timeline, the milestone is Senate service and the dated announcement concerning its end. The wider political context belongs in the Saint Lucian public-life profile, where attribution can be given the space it needs.

2007–2010: recognition and another political title

The official Saint Lucia Birthday Honours supplement in the London Gazette, dated 16 June 2007, lists Rick Wayne under OBE for services to journalism. This verifies both the distinction and its stated basis. Official 2007 notice.

The Saint Lucia Oral History Project’s bibliography lists Lapses and Infelicities in 2010. Its appearance gives the chronology a book milestone beyond the bodybuilding titles. Saint Lucian bibliography.

Those records should not be made into a ranking of careers. An honor has a particular citation; a book has its own subject and readership. The timeline places them beside one another because both are documented parts of Wayne’s public work. Readers interested in the political writing can consult our books guide, which also identifies unresolved edition dates in earlier titles.

2017–2022: literary presentation, a CBE and retrospective interviews

A STAR press release of 27 May 2017 announced a forthcoming Saint Lucia Writers Forum reading with Wayne at Castries Central Library. It named Lapses & Infelicities as the planned reading selection. This records an announced event; it is not an independently verified attendance report. 2017 announcement.

On 8 June 2019, Saint Lucia’s Extraordinary Gazette published the Birthday Honours list naming Wayne a CBE. The notice identifies entertainment, professional bodybuilding, advocacy and journalism as the areas of service. The 2019 record is why a present-day biographical heading should not stop with the earlier OBE. Official 2019 notice.

The Bodybuilding Legends show published a Rick Wayne interview page in October 2022, revisiting his sporting and editorial experience. Such retrospective interviews extend the documentary trail but should remain distinct from contemporary evidence for the events recalled. Interview page.

These later milestones reveal continued interest in several aspects of the same career. The honors record formally combines fields often separated in short biographies; the literary announcement and interview show different audiences approaching the work from different starting points. That is the useful purpose of this chronology: to let those records meet while preserving their dates, scope and limits.
